HISTORY OF CAMP BISCAYNE
Camp Biscayne is steeped in history and dates back to the early 1900’s. In 1902 Ralph Middleton Munroe opened Camp Biscayne and built a group of wooden cottages here nestled in the mangrove hammock. He preserved as much as the hammock as possible because he believed it had “worked out life’s problems and established itself as the legitimate occupant of the land”. This private oasis became a winter retreat for the rich and famous. Historical figures such as Alexander Graham Bell and the Rockefeller family would stay at this rustic retreat and spend their days fishing and sailing on Biscayne Bay. Camp Biscayne is a special place that feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Miami. It is located in the Coconut Grove village center next to the Barnacle Historic State Park.
