WHAT’S TO LOVE ABOUT THE ANCHORAGE | COCONUT GROVE
The Anchorage is one of the smallest gated communities in Coconut Grove. With just 5 homes situated along Anchorage Way, it offers the ultimate in privacy and exclusivity. It is well known to the locals because it was the home of basketball superstar Alonzo Mourning for many years. Due to the fact that there are very few homes in The Anchorage, there is a significant amount of interest whenever a property becomes available.
The Anchorage dates back to 1924 when William Jennings Bryan (former Secretary of State for Woodrow Wilson), purchased the property to build his home and named it Marymount. He later sold the northernmost section of the land to the Methodist Church which is now the Chabad of the Grove. After Bryan’s death, his wife sold the home to renowned scientist Baekeland, inventory of Bakelite, the forerunner of plastic. In the early 1930s members of the Baekeland family enjoyed their winters here. The original home of William Jennings Bryan still exists in the community today.
Located off of Main Highway in South Coconut Grove, The Anchorage is situated on Biscayne Bay which allows for spectacular views for several of the waterfront homes. It is also just steps from the main village of Coconut Grove where you will find shops, restaurants, cafes, and a movie theater.
